Forgive me some liberties, Ms. Smartypants.

Because nobody believes me when I say it, please listen (read) to (a bit of) mimismartypants. In particular, pay attention to the third footnote. As a mother (an adoptive mother to boot), a wife and an intellectual, she better phrases my entire argument about why marriage and child-rearing is so often entered into for all the wrong reasons.

I don’t hate children. I don’t hate couples or marriage. But, I have no respect for people whose entire beings reside in those concepts. Let’s face it: fundamentalism is a poor philosophy in whatever incarnation.

And sorry about all the punctuation.

  1. I’m glad Mimi is questioning the expected linear progression of our lives. However, why is “self-fulfillment” a valid rationale for procreation, but blindly reaching the next level is somehow abhorant? Seems to me the only difference is that one person knows they are selfish, whereas the other does not.

  2. I think self-aware selfishness at least connotes a decision to go against logic, rather than to simply follow the predetermined path, which in turn implies some degree of introspection. To me, the introspection is the difference. It’s almost a free will vs. determinism argument in that sense. Still, procreation seems a feeble grasp at immortality, a weak-willed attempt at making a mark. I’m glad for those willing to take the more humanly responsible route of adoption, if the human instinct for child-rearing is so inescapable.

  3. I like that line… “a feeble grasp at immortality”. And, on some theoretical level, I agree that introspection is better than ignorance. However, in practice I’d say this world is better suited to folks who are blissfully unaware. In either case, let’s all save the children by getting vasectomies.

  6. No offense to the forefathers of the Two Kings philosophy, but Bjorn and I *do* have the cognitive capacity to lead. The D is welcome in the kingdom at any time.
